When a chat grows long

When a conversation grows close to what the model can read at once, the agent summarises the earlier part and carries on.

  • While it writes, a divider reads Summarising conversation; once done it reads Context summarised, and pressing it shows the summary.
  • Messages above it are dimmed, because the agent now reads them through the summary.
  • Later replies work from the summary and what came after it, and the agent can still read the earlier turns word for word when it needs a detail.

The Conversation memory ring

The ring beside the send button is Conversation memory: how much of this chat the model can still see, against the model selected in the message box, counted from the last model call. It is not the Memory feature.

The ringMeaning
A percentageHow full the model’s window is.
AmberFrom 60%.
RedFrom 85%, where the agent summarises older messages on its own.
SummarisedRight after a summary, until the next call measures again.

Picking a model with a smaller window moves the ring at once, before anything is sent. Pressing the ring explains the figure and offers Summarise now, which asks first, because older messages are then replaced by a summary for the agent (you can still read them).

Summarise it yourself

Type / and pick Compact, or type /compact, to summarise the conversation yourself.

  • Words after the command tell the summary what to keep, for example /compact keep the pricing table.
  • Sent while the agent is answering, it waits for that answer to finish.
  • It takes no attachments, and a custom skill cannot be named compact.

Leaving and coming back

Conversations are durable: closing the tab mid-turn keeps the turn, and reopening reconnects to the run where the stream left off without repeating anything.

If the connection drops while a reply is being written, the reply shows Connection lost. Reconnecting… and picks up where it left off on its own; the agent keeps working meanwhile, so nothing needs sending again.

Drafts

Unsent text, attachments, selected skills and reply settings stay with each conversation while you move around the portal. The text and selected skills also survive reloading the tab, until you send them; attachments and reply settings do not. Closing the tab, signing out or switching accounts clears these drafts.
